Public Enemies I
wish “Public Enemies” were a better movie. Somehow it has all the right things
going for it and yet it remains – I can’t say a bore – but
much less than I would have liked.
It’s the story of John Dillinger, and Johnny Depp
is, as always, a master of his part; the problem is that the part is
seriously incomplete. Yes, I know
we know very little about him other than what he did in the year-and-a-half
that he was Public Enemy No. 1, but watching Depp
break out of jail, rob banks, shoot it out with the feds, find a girlfriend
(Marion Cotillard) and die outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago is actually not enough to
make a great, or even a good film. |
